èNostra, scaling Italy’s first 100% renewable energy cooperative on one platform

Italy’s first 100% renewable energy cooperative—democratically owned by its 18,700+ members—generates, supplies, and scales clean energy across the country. Gohorto helps èNostra run the membership, the collective installations, and the renewable energy communities as one connected operating system.

èNostra: 100% renewable, 100% cooperative

Founded on 18 July 2014 out of the European REScoop20-20-20 project—by Avanzi, Retenergie, and EnergoClub—èNostra became the first Italian energy cooperative to produce and supply 100% renewable electricity through a participatory, democratic model. In 2017–18, èNostra merged with Retenergie, uniting production, consumption, and sale of renewable energy in a single cooperative entity.

As of 2024, èNostra counts approximately 18,700 members and has supplied 63,634 MWh of electricity—producing 4,917 MWh annually from collective installations co-financed by member capital. The cooperative serves households, businesses, and non-profits, and is a member of REScoop.eu, the European Federation of Renewable Energy Cooperatives.

A strategic partnership built for energy democracy at scale

èNostra is more than a renewable energy supplier—it is a cooperative experiment in energy democracy. 18,700+ members co-own the cooperative; some co-finance the collective installations that generate clean electricity; many are part of renewable energy communities (CER) that consume what is produced locally; and across Italy, èNostra’s technical and legal team supports new CERs being established under Italian and EU regulation.

For all of that to operate as one cooperative, èNostra needs an operating layer that handles members, plants, communities, tariffs, projects, and consulting in one place. Gohorto is that layer.

Key takeaway
A long-term partnership: èNostra builds renewable energy communities; Gohorto provides the operating system that lets a cooperative of 18,700+ members, dozens of plants, and emerging CERs run with cooperative discipline.

Why scaling a renewable energy cooperative is uniquely demanding

  • 1
Members, prosumers, and beneficiaries are not interchangeable
Cooperative members vote democratically; prosumers co-invest in plants and benefit from tariffs; consumers buy 100% renewable supply. Each role requires distinct workflows—even though many people play multiple roles.
  • 2
Many small assets, not one big plant
Collective installations are distributed across Italy. Each plant has its own location, financing structure, performance data, and reporting requirement.
  • 3
Energy communities (CER) are regulated and complex
Italian and EU regulation around renewable energy communities is evolving rapidly. CERs require legal structuring, technical configuration, and ongoing operations—all of which èNostra supports.
  • 4
    European cooperative network coordination
As a member of REScoop.eu, èNostra exchanges practices and projects with renewable energy cooperatives across Europe—participation has to be operationally lightweight.
From the client
“Energy democracy is not a slogan—it is daily operations: members, plants, energy communities, prosumer tariffs, regulatory filings, and consulting projects all moving together. Gohorto helps èNostra run that complexity as one cooperative operating layer.”

How Gohorto powers èNostra (capabilities)

01
Member onboarding & democratic governance

New members join through structured workflows—shares, voting rights, communications preferences, and prosumer status all tracked from day one.

02
Collective installation management

Each renewable plant has a structured profile—location, financing, performance, and prosumer beneficiaries—giving the cooperative full visibility over its productive assets.

03
Renewable energy community (CER) projects

New CER projects are managed end-to-end—legal structuring, technical configuration, member onboarding, and ongoing operations—reusing templates that compound institutional know-how.

04
Technical & legal consulting

èNostra’s consulting projects for external CERs run as configured engagements—scope, deliverables, and outcomes managed alongside the cooperative’s own portfolio.

05
Member communications & engagement

Annual general meetings, governance votes, and ongoing engagement with 18,700+ members are coordinated from the same system that runs operations.

06
European cooperative network participation

Joint projects and knowledge sharing with REScoop.eu and European partners use shared templates and structured collaboration—amplifying èNostra’s influence beyond Italy.

These figures only stay coherent—and continue to grow—because the underlying operating layer treats members, plants, energy communities, and consulting projects as part of one cooperative portfolio.

Where the partnership goes next

Italy’s renewable energy community (CER) framework is opening one of the most exciting institutional opportunities in the European energy transition. The partnership with èNostra and Gohorto provides a repeatable foundation—templates, workflows, and reporting structures that turn each new CER, each new collective installation, and each new wave of cooperative members into a launchpad for the next.
